4 Wedding Cake Shopping Tips

One of the most important aspects of your wedding reception is the cake. Everyone expects a traditional wedding cake cutting ceremony. You want to have a beautiful wedding cake that wows your guests but also tastes great.

Traditionally, wedding cakes are the dessert of choice for guests at the wedding reception. Although, many modern brides have gone away from the huge cake and opted for a smaller cake for the wedding party and a different dessert for guests.

However, in most cases, wedding cakes are layered or multi-layered with icing, beads, and other embellishments that would reflect the wedding theme.

Here are some helpful wedding cake shopping tips that will help you find the best wedding cake and cake baker!

1. Find Out The Ordering Time Frame

Time is a very important factor when making wedding plans. You would not want your wedding to appear rushed or quickly slapped together. Therefore, since the wedding cake is a big part of the wedding plan, it is important to have your order in at the bakery in a timely manner.

When you are wedding cake shopping, make sure to ask the bakery what their time frame is for ordering a cake from them. This way, you will not be in a hurry and worried about having your order in on time.

2. Verify the Details of the Cake and its Cost.

While taste testing all the cake flavors and icing and looking at all the design options, it can be easy to overlook the price.

The bride and groom may not realize that ever change and embellishment done on the cake can mean more money in the end.

Make sure that you clearly discuss with your baker about exactly what you are getting as far as flavors and embellishments and how much it’s going to cost for everything. You certainly don’t want any surprises later on.

3. Inform Your Baker of Wedding Day Plans

Weddings can be held and a variety of different venues and day-of timetables. Therefore, make sure your baker knows exactly where to be and what time to have the cake delivered so there are no hiccups on your wedding day.

If you’re having an outdoor wedding reception, make sure that your baker is aware of this. Most icing does not hold up well in the heat, so your baker may need to make special accommodations.

4. If You’re on a Budget, Think About Decorating Your Own Cake

It’s actually not uncommon to hear about people doing their own wedding cake. It’s actually a great idea and can save you a lot of money.

One option is to order a plain cake with white frosting and no decor (you could even get one from Walmart). Then just buy some decorations and stick them on yourself. Here is an example of some icing decorations that you could put on your cake.
